3 Tips for Traveling With CBD Internationally

Cannabidiol or CBD is undoubtedly the breakout product of the decade. Although it’s been legal for only a year, the market for CBD is already worth billions, and industry players expect it to hit $20 billion by 2020. It’s extracted from hemp, a variety of cannabis with less than 0.3% THC levels, as mandated by the 2018 Farm Bill.

The chemical is said to be a potent natural medicine, with users claiming it offers relief from a variety of ailments ranging from anxiety and chronic pain to high blood pressure. Still, there’s very little scientific research to back these claims up, and although the FDA has explicitly stated most of these medical benefits aren’t proven, people have been buying CBD products in droves.

Still, the extract itself is federally legal, and although the FDA has forbidden sellers from putting it in foods and beverages, it can be sold in its pure form, as long as it meets federal THC limits.

According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), marijuana and certain cannabis-filled products stay illegal under federal law, and passengers cannot fly with them.

Back in May 2019, the TSA updated its ‘What can I bring Page’ on medical marijuana, stating that passengers can now fly with some forms of CBD and Epidiolex, an FDA approved drug derived from hemp that’s used to treat two rare and hard to treat pediatric epilepsies. Here are some tips to keep you out of trouble next time you’re traveling with CBD.

Research the states you’re traveling to and from. Although CBD is legal under federal law, states have different legislation on CBD, and this patchwork legislation makes it a little difficult to move CBD across states. This makes it important for travelers to research the rules and regulations of the state they’re leaving and the one they’re heading to.

Review the Certificate of Analysis (COA). Due to the industry’s state of uncertainty, there’s a lot of defective CBD products out there. Ideally, you should opt for products that have been tested by third-party labs and have a certificate to prove it. This way, you can review its ingredients and make sure that it contains less than 0.3% THC.

Proper packaging is important too. The TSA has outlined certain standards for aqueous products like CBD, stating that travelers can bring a quart-sized bag of liquid gels, pastes, creams, and aerosols that contain less than 3.4oz of liquid each in a carry-on bag. It is therefore important for you to ensure that your CBD is packaged in an aviation-compliant way.

Analysts advise that if you are ever in doubt regarding whether or not to travel with a particular CBD product, it would be prudent to check the websites or contact companies like ChineseInvestors.com Inc. (OTCQB: CIIX) and VIVO Cannabis Inc. (TSX.V: VIVO) (OTCQX: VVCIF) for appropriate suggestions.
