Cannabidiol (CBD) use has been on the rise this decade, with more and more people turning to the cannabinoid to help manage their ailments. It would be an understatement to say this compound is versatile. CBD has proven effective against such a variety of medical conditions that it’s slowly but surely becoming this decade’s miracle drug. The only question that remains, what else can CBD do? Well, researchers at the University of Westminster recently made a fascinating discovery.
One of the growing concerns medical professionals worldwide have had is the increasing bacterial resistance to antibiotics. Bacteria have been slowly becoming resistant to antibiotics over the years, and scientists fear that if the trend continues, global death estimates could increase from 700,000 up to 10 million per year by 2050. However, recent findings show that there may be a reprieve from this outcome.
A CBD study done at the University of Westminster found that CBD may be able to increase the effectiveness of antibiotic treatments, especially for E. Coli. According to findings from the study, “when applied in combination with a range of antibiotics, CBD increased the antibacterial efforts of selected antibiotics, depending on the bacteria type.”
The bacteria’s resistance works like this; the bacteria release small compounds, and these compounds allow them to develop a membrane vesicle that prevents antibiotic treatments from being effective. During the study, researchers discovered that CBD had the ability to stop E.Coli from creating membrane vesicles, thus allowing the antibiotic to work and prevent the bacteria from propagating.
Findings from the study state that “CBD, in combination with specific antibiotics, may thus possibly be used as an adjuvant to selectively target bacteria to sensitize them to antibiotic treatment, thus reducing antibiotic resistance.”
Dr. Sigrun Lange, the study’s lead researcher had this to say, “Our findings highlight that cannabis oil application, in conjunction with antibiotic treatments, may be an interesting addition to the development of new antibiotics to help reduce antibiotic resistance, especially given that antibiotic resistance is on the rise and predicted to be a global health disaster.”
The discovery has been an extremely exciting one, especially among the medical community who know how dire the situation was going to be. Still, more research is needed to definitively conclude that CBD could be used to enhance antibiotic treatments. The next step is now to step up clinical trials to provide evidence of benefits in real patients.
It is widely believed that CBD companies like Dama Financial and Marijuana Company of America Inc. (OTCQB: MCOA) wouldn’t be surprised if the trials confirm that CBD can stop superbugs in their tracks.
