How Long Can CBD Last Before Going Bad?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is all the rage these days. From a compound that was almost unknown three years ago, it has grown into an industry worth billions, and it’s expected to grow even bigger in the coming years.

The hemp extract’s popularity is due to its ability to work against a wide variety of medical conditions. The list is almost unending, and it includes anxiety, high blood pressure, and chronic pain. There’s even a CBD-based drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat seizures in severe and hard to manage pediatric epilepsies.

But, does cannabidiol go bad? Like all natural compounds, cannabidiol has a lifespan. You may think that at the end of its lifetime CBD starts emitting an odor, or becomes harmful to your health, like bad meat, but it doesn’t. At the end of its lifetime, CBD just becomes unusable. Its potency and effectiveness decrease until it’s a pricey bottle of useless liquid.

However, CBD doesn’t have a set lifespan. CBD oil usually lasts for 12 to 24 months, but ultimately, its lifespan depends on how it was manufactured. The strain and quality of the raw hemp used will also determine how long the CBD will last, coupled with the extraction method used. C02 extraction, for instance, results in CBD oil with a longer shelf life.

Don’t forget about the type of packaging. Darker bottles would prevent direct sunlight from degrading the quality of the cannabidiol oil, and a tight cap will keep air away from the oil, preventing oxidation. A more transparent bottle and loose cap would lead to the opposite, degraded CBD that’ll expire much sooner.

Usually, the CBD oil is infused in carrier oils, and their job is carrying the CBD extract. These include hemp seed oil, olive oil, coconut oil, and MCT oil. Since the CBD is suspended in these oils, it will only be viable for as long as the oils last. Packaging comes into play again, since oils will degrade when exposed to a harsh environment.

How you store your CBD also plays a big part in its lifespan. The most harmful element to introduce would be sunlight. Keeping your cannabidiol oil in a cool, dry place is the best way to keep it viable. You could also refrigerate the oil, but long exposure to the cold will change its texture. However, it’s not a big deal, and running warm water over the bottle ought to fix it.

The easiest way to find out the CBD oil’s lifespan would be to check out the packaging. Coupled with good packaging and responsible storage, the oil is guaranteed to last a good while.

Analysts say these intricacies of keeping CBD viable could be the reason why CBD entities like MCTC Holdings Inc. (OTC: MCTC) and Sugarmade Inc. (OTCQB: SGMD) takes customer education seriously so that users can benefit fully from their purchases.
