This Week In Cannabis: Cannabis Moves Further into the Mainstream

Last weekend was April 20th, which is largely recognized as the international holiday for cannabis. In years past, the day marked a day of protest.

But as the reform movement has obtained victories and the cannabis industry continues to emerge, cannabis continues to go mainstream. This last week was proof of that.

Below is a recap of what happened this week in the cannabis world.

Carl’s Jr CBD-infused burger gets massive publicity

What happened: The Carl’s Jr fast food chain debuted a CBD-infused burger over 4/20 weekend in Denver.

The burger was apparently a big hit because it sold out at the test location, a fact which has been pointed to many times on social media and in the mainstream media.

Why it matters: CBD is being infused into just about everything these days, as highlighted by this fast food burger.

Interest in CBD is growing at an exponential rate, as evidenced by the enormous amount of coverage the burger received considering that it was sold at just one location in one city.

Cannabis question is asked on the hit TV show Jeopardy

What happened: Earlier this week on an episode of the popular game show Jeopardy contestants were asked a question to which the answer for it was ‘cannabis.’

The question involved host Alex Trebek referencing the first legal adult-use sale in United States history in Denver in 2014.

Why it matters: The show is really popular, especially among an older demographic that may not be exposed to cannabis facts very often.

The show was viewed by an especially large audience because a current contestant named James Holzhauer is on a historic run. The timing couldn’t have been better.

Study suggests that CBD can help improve quality of life among epilepsy patients

What happened: A team of researchers looked into whether or not the quality of life improved among patients who suffered from treatment-resistant epilepsy.

The researchers concluded that ‘CBD may have independent positive effects on quality of life beyond improved seizure control.’

Why it matters: In many scenarios, the use of CBD will help people suffering from epileptic seizures. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case.

The results of this study suggest that in those unfortunate cases, CBD can still provide benefits, albeit in a more limited fashion and like other cannabis medicines can have crossover benefits.

Maine’s newly released draft of adult-use cannabis regulations include a residency requirement

What happened: Maine was one of four states to legalize cannabis in 2016. It is the only one of those states yet to launch an adult-use cannabis industry.

This week Maine released draft regulations and it included a residency requirement which requires license applicants to prove that they have been a resident of Maine for at least 4 years.

Why it matters: A residency requirement limits the number of people/entities that can be involved in a state’s legal cannabis industry.

It can cause some issues such as making it harder for companies to raise capital, but it also gives residents a head start on establishing their companies which has its own merits.

Federal bill is introduced that would automatically seal past cannabis convictions

What happened: A bill was introduced into the United States House of Representatives this week that would seal past federal cannabis convictions if it were to become law.

The legislation is titled The Clean Slate Act and was introduced by Representatives Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-DE) and Guy Reschenthaler (R-PA).

Why it matters: This session of Congress has been the most active of all-time from a cannabis bill introduction standpoint.

The bills that seem to be getting the most media coverage are those that focus on the cannabis industry, which is a great thing, but not as great as helping people work towards restoring their lives.
