UK Government Warns Travelers About Taking CBD to the UAE

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) in the UK has warned travelers to be wary of carrying anything that may contain CBD when they travel to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) since this could land them in jail for about four years.

The UAE is known for its lack of tolerance of drugs, and that attitude carries over to anything that could contain an ingredient contained in banned drugs. Products like electronic cigarettes (e-cigs), body lotions and candy could be confiscated if their ingredients contain any marijuana compound, and the traveler may face criminal charges for trying to carry that item into the Emirates. This warning was contained in a reminder issued by the FCO this week.

Skin and body care items containing CBD are legally available in most of Europe as long as those products only contain trace amounts of tetrahydrocannabidiol (THC), the cannabinoid that makes users high.

The authorities in the United Arab Emirates don’t have a similar tolerance to these products as is the case elsewhere, so travelers should be more vigilant when heading there, the FCO warns.

Additionally, the FCO notice also states that it isn’t just the items carried that can land a traveler in trouble in the UAE. Even what is in your body is regarded as possession, so the authorities will not be more lenient with you just because an illegal substance has been found in your bloodstream.

Don’t think that since you are just transiting through the UAE then their drug laws will not apply to you. The FCO warning states that the United Arab Emirates have excellent security and technology, so there is a high chance that transit passengers who have even trace amounts of drugs or other banned substances will be arrested.

This warning shouldn’t be taken lightly by the travelling public because the media has brought to light cases of travelers who found themselves on the wrong side of the law at entry points.

One of the cases that caught the attention of the media was of a Canadian woman who was found with a bottle of CBD in her pocket and she was denied entry in addition to risking a lifetime ban from entering the U.S. Her case was reviewed and she survived the lifetime ban.

Another case involved an American female student who was arrested in China with CBD oil. Fortunately, she too got off lightly.

Such examples illustrate what CBD industry experts have always agreed with industry players like Willow Biosciences Inc. (CSE: WLLW) and Youngevity International Inc. (NASDAQ: YGYI) that warn people to be aware of the laws of the jurisdictions that they visit or travel to.
