CBD Manufacturers Use the Absence of a Notorious Weedkiller to One-Up the Competition

CBD is all the rage these days. It comes with such a wide range of medical benefits that its popularity was only inevitable. Sellers have also picked a lot of interest in this industry with a product this good, and now some of them are looking for ways to beat their competition and come out on top. Glyphosate is a controversial weedkiller that’s very commonly used in the U.S. and around the world. While it is legal in America, an agency of the World Health Organization (WHO) concluded in 2015 that it causes cancer. Some countries banned it in response, the most recent being Germany.

A number of CBD manufacturers, including RE Botanicals and Bluebird Botanicals, have started rolling out CBD products whose labels state the absence of glyphosate to get a little edge over their competitors. Glyphosate is very toxic to cannabis, so most cannabis and hemp growers don’t use it. However, small amounts can still show up in plants exposed to it through soil or the wind.

Henry Rowlands, the Director of The Detox Project, a European advocacy group that issues glyphosate-free certification for products, calls hemp and marijuana bio accumulators. They absorb contaminants from the soil faster than they excrete them, literally sucking the pesticides from the ground. He attributes this to the hemp’s structure and how it’s formed. Most organic certification and pesticide tests don’t screen for glyphosate among the residual particles checked during cannabis testing, thus the power of the ‘glyphosate free’ labels, as glyphosate can show up in hemp products that have been certified organic.

The Detox Project tests thousands of products each year. It charges $1, 499 a year, to check products for glyphosate residue, and this certification is valid for a year. Most CBD manufacturers agree that glyphosate testing makes good business sense. Amanda Bowman, the Quality Assurance Manager at Bluebird Botanicals, concurs that it’s essential, especially when you think about the number of herbicides and pesticides that we unknowingly consume daily. She states that screening for additional pesticides beyond what’s required by the law can assure customers who are trying a new product such as CBD.

Rebecca Spector, the West Coast director for the Center for Food Safety, states that more and more customers are becoming aware of the remnants of pesticides and fertilizers in products. She insists that glyphosate testing is crucial, especially for ingestible products. It is the most common pesticide used in the US today, after all. Distancing yourself and your product from the pesticide is a great way to get some edge over the competition since glyphosate testing confirms to your customers that your product is clean and safe to use.

Experts wonder what longstanding CBD industry players like Earth Science Tech Inc. (OTCQB: ETST) and ChineseInvestors.com Inc. (OTCQB: CIIX) have to say about this new marketing tactic.
