How CBD Affects Your Memory

Cannabidiol’s (CBD) far-reaching medical abilities have been discussed far and wide. The compound’s potent medical properties have captured the minds of many, with the medical, sports, and health and wellness communities clamoring to know more about it.

Currently, CBD is known to cure anxiety, depression, and high blood pressure, among an almost never-ending list of ailments. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a CBD derived drug to manage two rare pediatric epilepsies, Dravet Syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome.

There has also been interest in the hemp extract’s ability to help with memory. This is despite the fact that marijuana is known to adversely affect short term memory. However, this is due to THC (delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol), the compound responsible for giving marijuana users the infamous ‘high’. CBD, on the other hand, has an entirely different effect on memory.

A few studies have found that the hemp extract can, in fact, have a positive effect on memory loss. A 2017 study done in Australia investigated cannabidiol’s potential as a treatment option for Alzheimer’s disease. The study was conducted on mice over eight months, and researchers found that CBD was able to reverse cognitive defects in the mice.

The compound is apparently helpful in improving social recognition memory. Another study found that ‘long term cannabidiol treatment prevents social recognition memory deficits in Alzheimer’s disease transgenic mice.’

An older study published by the National Center for Biotechnology on the effect of cannabis on memory function also found encouraging results. The study concluded that marijuana with higher concentrations of THC and lower CBD levels did negatively impact memory function. Strains with higher levels of CBD were however easier on memory function than the THC heavy strains.

Another 2011 study carried out by Australian researchers Tim Karl and Carl group found that CBD promotes the growth and development of brain cells, which reduced the decline of memory and other brain functions.

Degenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s are often characterized by the rapid decline and destruction of brain cells. Inflammation is a big cause, and the greater the inflammation the more the impact on brain cells.

On top of being a potent anti-inflammatory, cannabidiol also has the ability to stimulate brain tissue, and it has been found to reverse and even prevent the devastating effects of Alzheimer’s.

Although there is evidence that CBD has a positive effect on memory function, more research is needed before it can be used as a drug. Currently, the only FDA approved CBD-based drug is Epidiolex, an anti-seizure medication for children with rare forms of epilepsy.

Is there an end to the health conditions for which cannabidiol can be of help? Experts think even CBD companies, such as ChineseInvestors.com Inc. (OTCQB: CIIX) and No Borders Inc. (OTC: NBDR), could also be pleasantly surprised at the growing list of the medicinal benefits of cannabidiol.
