How to Beat the Cold and Flu With CBD

It’s hard to believe that in the year 2019, with all the medical advancements the human race has made, all it takes to put you in bed for a day or two is a common cold. Extremely communicable, the flu is one of the most uncomfortable conditions out there. Not quite life threatening, but it will definitely ruin your day.

Apparently, cannabidiol can be used to combat flu and cold symptoms in place of penicillin. Mary Clifton, a New York-based internal medicine doctor and cannabis expert, says that she recommends using CBD to stay healthy and combat the uncomfortable symptoms that come with the common cold and flu.

“Around cold and flu season, it should be a supplement. You are already in a good place to not get as sick once you get the virus.”

According to Clifton, CBD affects the amount of interleukins (a glycoprotein that regulates the immune system). CBD affects how your body produces the glycoprotein, bolstering the immune system and enabling it to combat the symptoms.

“If you’re doing cold and flu treatment, if you’re doing heavy exertion at the gym, you can put CBD in that situation and it’ll just be next to your advil,” she says.

CBD is a known analgesic, and these antibacterial properties can help it fight against any secondary bacterial infections that may develop. On top of that, it has potent anti-inflammatory properties that will help soothe a sore throat, open up the sinuses and make it easier to breathe.

We can’t forget to mention the compound’s pain relieving properties. A large portion of CBD users use it for pain relief, after all. Migraines and headaches are common flu symptoms, and CBD can help ease these symptoms.

Dr. Robert J. Melamede, the chairman of the Biology Department at the University of Colorado at Boulder, draws similarities between influenza and flu, and the similar effect cannabidiol has on them. When you get the flu or cold, your immune system reacts by attacking the virus, and this causes inflammation, resulting in symptoms like a runny nose and general achiness.

In influenza’s case, the immune system goes overboard, killing your cells and eventually leading to organ failure and even death. When the inflammation goes down, the body releases endocannabinoids which suppress the immune system.

Seeing as cannabidiol is quite similar in nature to the endocannabinoids released by the body, it can be used to suppress the immune system and keep inflammation down, thus eliminating the symptoms.

Experts think this information about the role that cannabidiol can play against the common cold and flu may not have come as news to CBD companies like LiveWire Ergogenics Inc. (OTC: LVVV) and Canopy Rivers Inc. (TSX: RIV) (OTC: CNPOF) who strongly believe that the full therapeutic benefits of this cannabinoid could decade decades to document.
