CBD Chewing Gum Launched in the UK

For the past few years, CBD has been riding a wave of good press, owed primarily to the glowing testimonials given by satisfied users. Both derived from the cannabis plant, cannabidiol was often lumped together with its infamous cousin THC, which is responsible for cannabis’ psychotropic high. However, it has become apparent that cannabidiol is quite different from THC, and it has very different effects. Only once in a while do you come across a medication as versatile as CBD, and it has only taken a short while for word to spread; cannabidiol is the new wonder drug, and everyone wants in on it.

UK brand Blockhead has been the latest to join the fray with the launch of what it claims is UK’s first-ever CBD infused chewing gum. The gum contains 3mg of CBD per piece, and the company states that this allows people to absorb the CBD much faster than other methods currently available on the market. The gum is also vegan and sugar-free.

The brand used menthol and peppermint to negate CBD’s notoriously strong taste. “We had to get that out of the gum. There’s none of that horrible pondwater taste to it at all,” said Blockhead CEO Danny Lowe. “If you were to have the gum without the CBD and hemp oil, it would be one of the strongest gums you could possibly taste. So much peppermint and menthol, but when you chew it, it feels almost like a sweet mint because of the way the CBD and hemp dull the flavor.”

According to Lowe, CBD isn’t just used by one specific age group. “Plus,” he adds, “ chewing gum is a really fun and enjoyable way of getting CBD into your body.” The product has already been rolled out to major retailers, and it will soon be announced for sale at £4.99 ($6.48) per pack.

Plenty of anecdotal evidence has surfaced over the years claiming that CBD is an effective solution for a series of maladies from chronic pain, anxiety, and depression to insomnia and epilepsy. There has been limited conclusive scientific research on whether these claims are factual or not, and brands that sell CBD-infused products are not allowed to make any health claims around CBD products. Still, demand for cannabidiol products is continuously on the rise, and experts suggest that demand will keep on increasing.

Lowe said he expected consumers’ and regulators’ understanding of CBD to change over time. “At the moment, you are just relying on people’s individual responses to CBD.”

Analysts think CBD industry players like ChineseInvestors.com Inc. (OTCQB: CIIX) and Geyser Brands Inc. (TSX.V: GYSR) still have a lot more products to bring to market as there seems to be no shortage of what can be made using CBD.
