Research Shows CBD Can Help Combat Social Anxiety Disorder Symptoms

Cannabidiol (CBD) is on the news yet again. For those who haven’t heard, CBD is a hemp extract that has been taking the world by storm, most especially the medical, sports, health, and wellness communities. The chemical is said to work against a ton of diseases, including anxiety, chronic pain, and high blood pressure.

A survey studying CBD use among Americans found that 20% of the people who used CBD did it to curb anxiety. Indeed, cannabis as a whole is known for its calming effects, as marijuana users can attest. However, this isn’t about your run of the mill anxiety, but a more debilitating, hard to manage version.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD), or social phobia, is a form of intense anxiety that’s characterized by a fear of being judged or negatively evaluated in a social situation. People with this condition are hyper-aware of themselves during social interactions, and they take great pains to hide the physical effects of the condition such as trembling, blushing and stumbling over their words.

Knowing very little about social interactions, they are often afraid of being seen as awkward and boring whenever they end up in one. As a result, people with this condition tend to avoid social situations, and they experience great anxiety and distress if they can’t avoid it.

Clearly, these symptoms can have quite adverse effects on your life, and in some cases, result in total isolation from the outside world. Fortunately, there are medicines that can be used to make the condition bearable and improve the patient’s quality of life, but like a lot of pharmaceuticals, they aren’t 100% safe, and patients have to deal with the side effects.

So how can these people find a way to live their lives to the fullest? The answer is in a paper published by Japanese researchers, and you guessed correctly, it does involve cannabidiol.

The researchers ran a study assessing the efficacy of CBD against social anxiety compared to placebo through a clinical trial. The trial involved 26 people suffering from the condition, and random subjects were selected among them and given 300mgs of CBD a day for four weeks in a row, while the remainder used a placebo.

At the end of the study, the researchers observed that the subjects that consumed CBD reported a significant decrease in anxiety, with no reports of health complaints from the 4-week treatment.

The final paper states that “In all, the results of the current study provide evidence for anxiolytic effects of repeated CBD administration in teenagers with SAD, indicating that CBD could be a useful option to treat social anxiety.”

Experts believe that the findings of this clinical trial aren’t surprising to CBD companies like VIVO Cannabis Inc. (TSX.V: VIVO) (OTCQX: VVCIF) and The Supreme Cannabis Company Inc. (TSX.V: FIRE) (OTCQX: SPRWF) that know that cannabidiol has a lot more benefits that are yet to be documented.
